Then proclamation of the objectives of Ayurveda and its objectives is done. Charak Samhita is written in eight sections and many chapters in each section. These sections are full of information and deep understanding of knowledge regarding etiology, pathogenesis, symptomatology, etc. of various diseases and disorders. Treatment part includes thousands of herbal compositions. These combinations are in the form of powders, decoctions and semisolid forms which are still in practice.
Development of the science, synopsis and key elements are given in first section. There are chapters dedicated to progenesis, fetal development and the care immediately after birth also. Charak Samhita is the Samhita dedicated to Kayachikitsa that is, Internal Medicine. Description of the subjects are in accordance with the theme. These Samhita include all branches of medicine described in the first post. But not much information on Shalya and Shalakya i.e., Surgery.
Every Chapter starts with prelude of the subject and ends with the summary of the chapter. All chapters are connected but there are references given when certain subject is described in details, elsewhere. Since this writing is different than the other literature in Sanskrit there is separate chapter on how to derive correct meaning from the verses. Terminology used in ayurveda is different from other literature in Sanskrit.
